My first rain garden...

i am sooo excited about this project!

i have never had an opportunity to build a rain garden before...in addition to that, the scale of this garden is so perfect for me!

ii can't wait to sink my spade into this one!
so today was our first date...it was all about getting to know one another...

this space provides several challenges...drainage is a biggy!

the driveway slopes down into the yard...all the other yards in the area also seem to slope toward this one

a huge tree came down last fall which has us questioning just how well we know the sun/shade situation

regardless, i spent my day getting better acquainted with its nuances...i unearthed some drainage tubing that had long ago stopped being effective...i also added a timber to help keep the soil and plantings off the driveway...

i isolated the area for our eventual rain garden...and began adjusting the step stones to allow a gentle stroll through the dry streambed

tomorrow i think i'll deepen the rain garden and begin roughing out the dry streambed

day two...

just finished my second day in the rain garden...

quite fitting that it began with a light shower

today i roughed out the area for the dry stream bed, went to the quarry and purchased some plants...
tomorrow we'll get a delivery of cobblestone and start planting!

day three...

rocks came today!!

should have inflated the tire on the wheel barrel...
well hello dry streambed, its nice to meet you!

tomorrow i'll be planting and transplanting along our streambed and in our brand new rain garden

it is already looking so lush and full...i really love it

the homeowner says the view is even better from the deck...perhaps tomorrow i can enjoy the view from there!

day four...

spent today planting the perennials that i'd picked out for the streambed and rain garden...

i also transplanted some nandina and boxwood b/c i didn't like where they were

oh, and i pulled out a bunch of ivy...i want there to be a slight separation between the planted garden areas and the more naturalized ivy areas...the ivy will always try to creep in where we don't want it, but it will be easier to delegate its removal if is clear where it is not supposed to be ;)
