Builders build houses...not gardens!
I nearly broke my shovel a few times today trying to get through the quarry left behind by the builder...but I am NOT complaining because once again, I struck GOLD!
This is another great family who LOVES their yard and wants to make the most of it...

First things first...
So, the existing plantings include a crepe myrtle, several Burford Hollies and azaleas....Sounds good, right?
A few problems, Burford Hollies grow to be 8-12 feet and our homeowner wants to be able to see out of their porch...fair enough
Secondly, the garden is in HOT sun much of the day...the azaleas are SAD...barely green and certainly not thriving...
So...we'll replace the existing hollies with something more suitable and move the azaleas to the back where there is lots of dappled shade...oh yeah, we'll move the liriope too...

A dozen azaleas find a new home...and some overgrown forsythia gets an up-do...
The azaleas were so sad out front...too much sun and terrible soil = an azalea in distress!
They will be much happier out back in the dappled sunlight of the back yard...
The forsythia was stealing all the soccer balls, baseballs, volleyballs, tennis balls, golf balls...you get the point...AND it was intertwined with kudzu vine in a battle it was sure to lose...
We'll have to keep an eye on that vine...it is sure to come back, but in the meantime, we can find soccer balls!

WOW!
the builder may have left us with several buckets of rocks (which we made into an awesome rock wall!) but he also left us with an amazing walk-way and landing around which we developed some very welcoming and pleasant gardens...
the crepe myrtle now spends its days with creamy white knock-out roses and blooming gardenia! this front porch will smell heavenly in the spring/summer!
the very square edges of the landing were softened by low yew that lend a real drapey sense to the space...i really love them!
of course we had to add ground cover, liriope and delicate anemone to the mix

diggin up cable lines...
i managed to dig up my first (and hopefully last) cable/internet line...ugh...
we'll stay away from that garden space until we are sure they've marked the line...
more to come...
