A clean slate...
I am excited to have another project so near my home! This one is sure to have a high impact as there is virtually nothing in the existing gardens...
The plan...we are looking for shade-tolerant evergreen foundation plantings, but nothing too "hedge-like"...we also want a mix of plantings so it has a nice cascading tier from front to back...
I like working in the shade and happen to be quite fond of the plants that like shade...this will be a fun one!!

When the price is right...
Initially the homeowners and I were imagining Otto Luyken Cherry Laurels for the back row planting...However, I spotted some Japanese Hollies for 15 dollars per plant...we did the math (in our heads!) and decided to go for it! Already we've saved $390!
The japanese hollies will grow to be about 5 feet tall and as wide. Of course they can be pruned as needed. In front of the hollies, we'll put Delaware Valley Azaleas. They are my favorite kind of azalea with a HUGE white bloom in the spring and foliage that is deep green...
We'll wait and buy those in 2 weeks when they go on sale at the local nursery...aren't we sooo tricky?!

A Wonderful Start for LESS THAN $500!!
The local nursery had provided the homeowner with a gorgeous plan...for $4000! We agreed we could do as good a job for A LOT less!
And we are well on our way!
We edged the existing beds, making them slightly deeper to accomodate more yummy things! After edging, we turned the soil to prepare it for planting. We were lucky...the soil was already rich in organic materials...there were some roots to dig out, but it was mostly just loosening and turning.
And it was worth our time to do it too...this Fall we intend to plant more so we'll have an easier time of it now that the area has been prepped.

Stay Tuned...
We are far from over...We'll be adding some azaleas and perennials in the weeks to come!
They've Arrived!...
We initially thought we'd have room for 8 Delaware Valley Azaleas...However, we scaled it back so we'd have more room for perennials, the car, and the existing Mountain Laurel (we are hoping it will "snap-to" after a brutal winter last year...)
The azaleas are gorgeous...dark and thick...you can almost imagine their huge white blossoms in May!

The azaleas were purchased with a 20% off coupon from the nursery...each plant ended up costing $29...
