Three Cheers for Shade!
Too bad this project didn't start over the summer...I would have welcomed an opportunity to work in this shade!
This is a wonderful garden, and a fabulous environment...What it needs is a slight taming...TONS of liriope, day lilies, etc...
We'll start with a garden "renovation" out front. The shrubs in front of the house are blocking too much of the lower windows and have been pruned incorrectly...we'll give them a hard pruning to stimulate some lower growth and create a more "natural" looking plant...
The day lilies also seem out of place in the front garden...while beautiful in bloom, they seem unintentional where they are...they will get moved and the extensive liriope will get divided and placed out front...
We need to be cognizant of the erosion issue on the right side of the yard...there is a creek there so the more rooty plants we can plant, the better!
The homeowner has big plans for the back yard as well...I know they are anxious for us to get back there too!

diggin the back...
we've begun our work out back...that is not to suggest that we are done out front!
there is a creek that runs along side this yard...over the years, the homeowner's have lost some of their yard to erosion..it is not the nicest view either
so...we are planting a nice green screen to serve as a back drop to even more yummies...there is a lot of shade back here, but not too much! the sun does break through and there are a lot of trees...we might be well off to have several plantings tolerant to "dry-shade"
in the meantime, the screen will be composed of skip laurels...

Back tier in...what is next?!
our back tier is in...i know this homeowner loves lots of color...wonder what she has purchased since i last saw her?! can't wait to see!
Located next to a creek, we need to be mindful of erosion...to that end, we built up the garden along the flagstone path with more rocks...as the water puddles at the end of the path, it will find a very sweet pebble creek to wind its way to the "big" creek next door...if all goes well, the water will steer clear of our dirt and find the path of least resistance within the pebbles...
This yard has so many rocks to play with! I will continue to use them to outline gardens...We are slowly moving around the side and into the back...I'll have my tiller going again soon!

OH...the camera!
I wish my passion for gardening matched my passion for photography!
We spent several hours tilling, mulching and planting in the area around the shed...However, I neglected to take any "after" photographs...ugh!
The area is now vinca which will spread and share its purple blossom in the dappled shade...beyond the vinca there is ajuga already established...they should get along nicely...
I imagine in 2011 we'll be working on the other side fo the back yard...it gets more sun now that a tree or two have come down...we'll want to save the old ferns from the glaring sunlight and plant more sun-friendly perennials!
