What does One Hill + Twin Boys + Lots of Roots equal?
Danger!
But I am the lucky one (again) that got the call to help! This is another great family with great ideas and little time...
Their little boys (3 years old next week) want to play in the yard...Mom and Dad want to eliminate the obvious hazards...makes sense!
The hillside had been "off-limits" because the tree roots were a real tripping hazard...too high to mow around, the area became a bit of a no-man's land...
Our mission...to reclaim this space, remove/mitigate the obvious hazards, combat the erosion and build a lovely multi-season garden...

Sometimes life just works out...
Like when you are working with a homeowner who has too many rocks and you are working with another homeowner tackling an erosion issue...
Those that know me know that I love ROCKS! The middle-schooler across the street told me it has become my "signature" -- I think she's right :)
These rocks provided a nice visual break between our garden and the neighbor's...they will also serve to help contain the upper garden and protect against further erosion...a win-win!!

What did it take?
I always thinks its interesting to look at a project and see what the final cost was...in this case, it took 10 hours and about $450 dollars in plantings...much of which went towards top quality mulch, a total necessity if you ask me!
Had I been able to use the tiller, the time would have been reduced...however, given the tree and its roots, that was not an option...
The hard part is over... In the future, we'll have a much easier time adding plants to this garden...the "old" grass and the new mulch will decompose enough to give us "new" yummy, organic soil...
Oh, did you notice the newspaper? I put wet newspaper over the old zoysia grass...that will assist in removing that thick thick grass so that we can plant white knock-out roses next year!
