back to the future?...
the previous owner of this home was fond of the electric trimmer...the unfortunate victims? the yews, azalea and boxwood that were routinely "trimmed" into rounded shapes...
we're ready to take some of the 1950's out of this garden!
it won't be pretty, at least not right away...we'll need to "un-round" them and then wait for mother nature to fill in their middles....then we can selectively prune again to attain that more natural look and shape we are going after
i'm also hoping to add some more plantings and adjust the size of the garden spaces...the front bed could benefit from broader curves and the back beds could benefit from a little extra depth...
all in good time ;)

the boxwood is crowding the driveway and really not adding any value to the front garden...we'll remove it to provide more elbow room for the driveway and the andromeda that is so beautiful in that space
we'll prune this euonymous to encourage it to grow up and not out...and certainly not into a ball! the nandina has become leggy, but will regain its composure with a simple reminder
neighbors, don't let your neighbors trim with electric trimmers...
this oakleaf hydrangea is beautiful! too bad it was planted right in front of a low window! the lollipop behind it obscures access to the gate...i think we'll trim that down and in time, transplant the hydrangea to a more thoughtful spot...
this dogwood is happy and beautiful and has a lovely shape! we'll remove some low branches to raise the canopy as well as a couple branches that are crossing one another...as they crossed branches rub, the limbs will become injured, no one wants that!

there are some mature plantings and some perennial hosta, astilbe and peony in this back garden...although they are linked by their common edge, it feels like a hodgepodge...the azaleas will get a heavy pruning to rejuvenate their shape...the aucuba and forsythia will also get a pruning...they have been man handled and need to re-shape themselves...embrace their inner-shrub
in time, i'd like to deepen the bed by about a foot or so, and add more plantings...more textures, heights, colors...they are fond of grasses which could be a really interesting new element to this space

the boxwood is gone...and look! it was hiding some fabulous hosta!...the yew has been un-rounded although its hard to tell in this photo
i'd like to see the grass to the left of the walkway become more garden space...another foundation planting added between the andromeda and the yew would frame the space well and allow for a nice backdrop of new plantings
the drastic pruning on the right side of the front garden allows you to see the windows of the lower level...that's the perfect place for low growing mounding shrubs that won't compete with the windows...and will provide a natural "window-box"

wonder how amelia would feel about a custom window box on this extra wide window...
the curves of the garden on the right are too drastic...i think we'll broaden it and make it more gracious, less hurried

the pyracantha got a major trimming...up and not out please :) and our lolli-pop is no more!
when is trash pickup?
